External USB Hard Drive shows "Disk Not Ejected Properly"

After waking from sleep my M1 14" MBP running macOS Sonoma 14.5 displays a "Disk Not Ejected Properly" message even though the Disk icon remains visible on the desktop and Finder.

MacBook, macOS 10.13

Thanks Alweir but the 2TB SanDisk I'm referring to is not used for TM, regardless it is an EHD but the eject problem seems to be related to power loss to the EHD during sleep on the MBP. Preventing that power loss is the issue and although macOS Sonoma has a Setting called "Prevent automatic sleeping on power adaptor when the display is off." there is no longer the older "prevent hard disks from sleeping during power nap" or words to that effect.

What I did find as a stop gap workaround was a setting under Lock Screen called "Turn display off on power adaptor when inactive." Setting that to "Never" combined with "Prevent automatic sleeping on power adaptor when the display is off." means I simply need to turn on Sleep manually otherwise my screen saver stays on. Not really an issue as I use a Hot Corner for that action.

It's also possible that a powered hub rather that a direct USB-C connection would solve the problem but it's really down to Apple. This has been a long standing recognised problem that has not been addressed by them despite countless complaints.

Troubleshooting Automatic HDD Drive Ejections:

A. Single-Out this User:

See what happens when you crate a new user. Do you still get this error? If so, it is the macOS giving you the issue? If not, then it is the user giving you the issue.

B. Single-Out this Mac:

Plug this into a different Mac, seeing if you can get the ejection to work. If it works, then it is the Mac giving you the issue. If it doesn’t work, then it is the drive giving you the issue. On a Mac with no USB-A port, this would be the adapter to use: USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple

C. Use of a Hub with External Power:

If a direct connection won’t work to eject this, then you might need an additional power. Get an adapter of sorts. Get a hub —not a splitter —with external power. You’d likely find one on Amazon.com and Newegg.com.

Verify the Connection:

First off, see if the drive are is even seen in System Information...:

  1. Hold Down: the Option key
  2. Click: the Apple menu
  3. Choose: System Information or System Report
  4. Select: Storage from the list on the left
  5. Look For: any Disk Volume is seen. If not,
