Discrepancy in Message read status on my Apple devices

Why do the messages on my MacBook Air messages app continue to have a blue dot when I've already read those messages on my iPhone? In prior versions of iOS the blue dot would disappear from either when I read the message on the other (e.g. If I read the message on my phone the blue dot would disappear from my MacBook Air and vice versa). But now even when I read a message on my phone it stays "unread" on my computer.

Yes, that blue dot means an unread message. It does not mean the person is online. Messages doesn't have a presence indicator.

The first think I would do is to check if that you still have iCloud syncing for messages enabled on both of your devices. It shouldn't happen that these things turn off unexpectedly but sometimes it does.

Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices - Apple Support

Having that enabled on all of your devices should resolve your issue. However, I have noticed, occasionally, that I stil have something showing as unread on my Mac even though there is nothing unread on my iPhone. It's rare and is usually resolved by simply "reading" the message again on the Mac.

The small blue dot that appears on the side of some of your contacts indicates that they are currently active or online. It is a status indicator used by various messaging or social media apps to show which contacts are currently using the platform and available for communication.

The blue dot in Messages means the message is unread. Nothing more. Messages has no presence status indicators.
