I could not recieve and make calls after removing eSIM which was used as secondary

I encountered an issue with my iPhone where I was unable to make or receive calls. This problem arose after I removed an eSIM, which I used as a secondary SIM for travel, from Airalo (though it could be any provider).

During the eSIM setup, I set it as the primary SIM for calls and mobile data while traveling. After my trip, I no longer needed it, so I removed the eSIM from the network settings. However, it seems that some settings, specifically the primary SIM for calls, remained linked to the now-removed eSIM. Since this setting is no longer available in the contact details, it caused problems with receiving calls.

I tried several solutions: restarting the phone, toggling airplane mode, switching the network from automatic to manual, enabling "Receive All Calls" in Do Not Disturb mode, and checking call forwarding. None of these worked.

I thought maybe if I can make reappear that setting for setting with which SIM I want to receive calls I can set my physical as my primary and it will solve the issue. And it worked as I expected.

I finally solved the problem by downloading and installing a free eSIM from Ubigi. During the installation, I was prompted to choose which SIM to use for calls and mobile data, and I set my physical SIM as the primary. This fixed the issue, and now I can make and receive calls again.

I'm sharing this in hopes it may help someone else. It also highlights a potential issue that should be included in test cases for developers.

Test case for developers:

  1. Have a physical SIM installed.
  2. Add an eSIM.
  3. Set the eSIM as the primary SIM for receiving calls and mobile data.
  4. Remove the eSIM.
  5. Check if you can still make and receive calls after removing the eSIM.
