Hotmail not working

When will Apple fix this issue? Is there a way to get this message to the developers? We can no longer use hotmail accounts with Mail App on MacBooks/imacs (works fine on iPhone and iPad). This is because of the modern authentication. (Below is the email everyone is receiving). They say we need to add the account as exchange account. Fine. But with this type of account flagging emails don’t seem to work ( wrong number is flagged emails, some are impossible to unflag).

“Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access.

The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

What do you need to do?

If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.

How can you set up your Gmail, Apple Mail, or other third-party mail application?

Various non-Microsoft applications will have their own steps for connecting to your Outlook.com email account using modern authentication methods. See our help article - Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps. However, you may need to contact the creators of those applications to provide you with instructions. In many cases, simply removing and re-adding your account with the latest version of that application will configure it to use modern authentication methods. “

After multiple contacts with Apple and Microsoft, no instructions, no correction, nothing. The only quick fix is:

1- Use Outlook for Mac, which is terrible.

2- Use Mac Mail, adding the account as Exchange account (which will be ok .. kind of... because flagging emails will not work properly and I need to flag emails for follow-up).

3- Forward our emails to another account

4- Simply stop using hotmail/outlook.

Really annoying!!!

Some time ago, Microsoft said that they were migrating the Hotmail accounts to Outlook. When I log into Hotmail through my browser, it goes to outlook.live.com.

So I've recently had this same issue as the OP, where Apple Mail keeps wanting my password. After reading the link provided by the thread starter above, I created a new Apple Mail account using Exchange for my Hotmail account. It's basically userid@outlook.com. This new account had all my old Hotmail stuff in it. This seems to solve my problem, which sounds very similar to the original poster.

I deleted my old Hotmail account from Apple Mail, and all seems okay.

You are right, let me clarify.

I am using my MacBook 2018, iMac and the new M3. The app I am using is the Apple Mail App. My email is a Hotmail.com.

It keeps disconnecting and I get an error message claiming the password is wrong. Enter it again and again says it is wrong. I leave it alone and later it is working fine. Randomly! And then the error appears again. Sometimes it is receiving emails but not sending. Happening for the last 2 months.

  • Only happens with iMac and MacBooks, not with iPhone or iPad.
  • My devices are all updated.
  • Tried removing and readding account - didn't work
  • Tried changing passwords - same.
  • Tried new user - same.

Note: since Apple mail doesn’t allow us to add email as outlook , (the options are exchange or different account) I added the email as different account. This is because when I use exchange it works fine but the flagging emails doesn’t work properly (wrong number or emails flagged )

This is a Hotmail (for me) glitch that Apple needs to fix because I/we are on a MacBook Pro product (running Sonoma 14.5) and using AppleMail to email. Apple needs to add "Outlook" short-cut button on laptop mail settings to update to modern authentication for Outlook. **On my iPhone it was one easy click under mail settings to fix this issue. NEED THE SAME FOR ON MACBOOK asap.

I am not really understanding what the problem is here. First, none of this is supposed to happen for another two months. Microsoft is just sending you advance warning.

Next, both Microsoft and Apple only support software for so long, and likewise only hardware for so long. That's just the way it is with the technological world. As long as you can run relatively new software then you should have any problem at all. It's only when you run older hardware that cannot upgrade to the software version that is required that you will then find Hotmail won't work anymore. Even then there may be alternatives such as logging in with a web browser instead of using an application.

Again, this is something Microsoft is doing. The only thing Apple can do (and you don't even know if they haven't already done it) is include this feature in their software. In fact they may have already done it. Do you know for sure they haven't already? I kind of suspect you are seeing an issue where there may not even be one for you. You don't tell us anything about the hardware or software you are using so we cannot tell from that.

I have a 2018 MacBook, the latest IMac and the brand new M3. All updated with the last available versions. Tried everything, spent hours on the phone with Apple support. Hours chatting with MS. Apple says Microsoft needs to fix this. Microsoft says the problem is with the app (apple’s mail app).

All I know is that I can’t use my Hotmail account on my MacBooks. Everything works fine on my iPhone and iPad.

You are right. I shouldn’t be having this problem.

Again, you have not told us exactly what the problem is that you are encountering. All you have told us about so far is that you received an email.

I can tell you from my own experience that if your account is a personal one (not work or an institution) and you try to use the new settings, it does not seem to work (yet?). I would ultimately get a message about how I had to use an work or institution address. This was using non-Apple software that supports the new security protocol. That suggests pretty strongly that it is a Microsoft issue. I do not have a computer running any Apple software that is new enough to test this feature.

You could help figure this out by telling us what it was you did. As I said, we haven't really heard from you that you are having a problem, and under what conditions you are having this.

My wife uses Hotmail more than I do. She uses it on her computer daily and she reports that kind of behavior. I mostly use Hotmail on my iPhone maybe every other day and I don't have any problems. Nor does she report any iPhone Hotmail problems. This has been going on for several months now. Ergo, I suspect it is Microsoft messing around with their servers. We aren't changing anything on our end (apart from my today trying out the new settings we are supposed to start using in 2 months and they not working) so I really, really think this is Microsoft's end of things. And there's probably nothing we can do to fix it. The software I tested today has that feature but it still didn't work. Once I went back to using the old setting my software (Thunderbird) worked fine again.

I think we just have to wait and hope that by the time they throw the switch that all works again. Incidentally, I also have never had any problem when logging into Hotmail with a web browser.

Again, perhaps inadequate information. Is this a personal Outlook account, or an institutional one? I have a personal one and I haven't even been told anything by Microsoft which makes me wonder if they are even implementing it for personal accounts. Our institution runs two types of accounts using Gmail. One group requires the new authentication, the other does not.

Also no mention of what system version you are using and what software.

I am using a personal Hotmail account at home (directed to Apple Mail) on my MacBook Pro Sonoma 14.5 and having this issue.

I upgraded Apple Mail on my iPhone using the instructions at the very top post of this thread and it works fine. Am having this issue on my home-based MacBook. In short, we need instruction like above that work on a MacBook (not just on the phone).
