PiP for Google Maps doesn't seem to work anymore

I used to make use of Google maps and for multitasking purpose was able to make use of picture in picture mode, which basically made it possible to multitask or use multiple apps whilst still having Google Maps open. Suddenly as of last week I noticed I was not able to minimize Google maps to PiP mode anymore. Instead the app will fully minimize, thus hiding the full app screen. I still have the setting enabled under settings -> general -> Picture in picture -> "Start automatically".

Google Maps has also been updated to the latest version as well as IOS version 17.5.1. If it might help, I'm currently using an Iphone 13.

Anyone happen to know how I can enable PiP for Google Maps again?
