When using Mail on MacBook Pro 13" (Sonoma 14.5), I can no longer switch out of mail to another application then go back to mail by bringing mail to front or "show all" etc. I can compose a new message from the file menu but there is no resolution for bring the mailbox back up. I have to quit the mail application and re open it.

Quit the Mail.app relaunch it holding the Shift key down and compare your results.
If no insight—A SafeBoot Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies
Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled temporarily.
Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.
