2015 Macbook Air has black screen except for a white lock icon and a box to enter a password. What password do I use? Nothing works.

Have tried restarting while holding shift/control/option keys. Still black with white lock icon

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.7

A firmware passcode has been set on that machine.

There is no way to bypass it. You need the passcode.

If you are the original purchaser of the device, you can take it to Apple along with the original proof of purchase from an authorized retailer and they can re-set it.

If you bought it second hand and did not set the firmware passcode yourself, contact whoever you got the machine from. If you can't do that, it's a boat anchor. Recycle it.
