No vertical scroll option in Apple Books 6?

I'm running Apple Books Version 6.4 (6070.12.11) on Sonoma 14.5 (23F79) on my Macbook Air. I haven't used the app in a while, but I do remember I used to be able to scroll books vertically instead of turning the page. Where can I find that option now?

I can still use vertical scroll on my iPad and iPhone, but the option is not there on my desktop. None of these options are giving me the choice to turn on infinite scroll:

MacBook Air (M2, 2022)

There is no option, and never has been (as far as I recall).

I'm pretty sure it used to be there, though I suppose I could be misremembering. But I'd pretty confidently bet someone dinner that I was once able to scroll vertically in Apple Books....
