Why do I keep getting the spinning beach ball when trying to open Pages on my Mac?

I bought a brand new 2024 iMac in April, and have not been able to open Pages (or Numbers, Keynote and TextEdit). When I try to open it, I get the spinning beach ball and have to force quit the app. I did have my files transferred from my old 2009 iMac to the new computer…could that have something to do with it? I have updated Pages to the latest version.

I also have an occasional issue where I can’t put the computer to sleep/restart/shutdown. I was given a work-around to power off when this happens (about 4 times in the last two months).
