How to identify an unauthorized charge to my credit card from Apple?

@Apple charged me $79.99 on June 11. There is no receipt. They said “due to privacy laws” they cannot tell me what the charge was for! This was a charge using my credit card and my Apple ID. I’m no lawyer, but I’m pretty sure privacy laws are not intended to cover fraud. Why can’t I learn what the charge was for? Why no receipt?

Hi there,

This will all be assuming you reside in the United States:

Go to Settings -> Your Name (at the top) -> Media & Purchases -> View Account (use FaceID, TouchID, or Passcode to unlock) -> Purchase History

  • What is the exact description of the charge?
  • Were you able to verify the charge by viewing your Purchase History?
  • Do you have any Subscriptions? View or cancel app subscriptions on iPhone - Apple Support
  • Were you able to contact the bank that issued the card? They are the ones that approved the transaction and should be able to tell you what method of verification was used or if a person entered your card numbers.
  • If the charge did not come from Apple, then you most likely had your card details compromised. Scammers use names of well known companies in the description of the charge so you are less likely to dispute them and they will continue to charge you.

Receipts are sent to the associated email of the Apple ID of the person that used the credit card account. Apple (or any merchant) has no way of determining who the lawful owner of the account is. Determining ownership is the job of the bank that issued the card and law enforcement, not Apple's. Privacy laws do prevent Apple or any merchant from indiscriminately revealing private information, including receipts, account information etc. except to lawful owner and law enforcement if necessary.
