Handles problem with transitions

Hi,

I'm a newbie to FCP, and I'm having a problem with getting transitions to work. I'm on 10.8, the current version.

I have a two clips in .mov format and import them fine. I take the first clip and put it on the timeline, then use the Blade tool to cut it into two. At the cut point I drag the second clip so the second clip is embedded in the first. I preview this and it all looks fine

Then I add a transition on the first cut, drag it to the timeline, but get told "There is not enough extra media beyond clip edges to create the transition". There is minutes of media one one side of the transition, and ~10 seconds on the other. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

See the clip on the bottom (second clip in the timeline) starts at the physical first frame of the original media. There is nothing to create a transition with. When you answer Yes to the prompt if you want to continue or not with a transition, FCP automatically shifts that clip one second to the left, so there is enough media to use for the one second cross fade.
