Wrist Detection & Audible Notifications when phone is locked

I’m not sure if this is a “perfect storm” of settings or if it was just an oversight, but it is horribly annoying.

Why do I have to turn off “Wrist Detection” on my watch in order to get audible notifications when my iPhone is locked?

If wrist detection is on, I will not get any audible notifications (from my iPhone or through my headphones (any headphones)) unless my iPhone is unlocked. When my phone is unlocked, I receive audible notifications like I would expect, but the second it is locked, they’re gone. I do not have ‘do not disturb’ on or any other ‘focus profiles’ turned on during this issue.

Is there something else that I’m missing or does it all boil down to the Apple Watch and the “wrist detection” setting?

This is actually a feature:

When you’re not using your phone, and you’re wearing your watch, you will get the notification on your watch, since that’s where you’re more likely to see the notification.

If your phone is on, you’ll get it on the phone, since that’s the place you’re most likely to notice the notification from.

If you’re not wearing your watch, it will notify your phone, since your watch is likely on a charger and not a good device to notify.

It needs wrist detection on to see whether you’re wearing your watch or not, so when you turn that off, you get the notifications on both your watch and phone.
