Help on how to stop the barrage of notifications when I unlock my phone

When I unlock my phone, say, after driving somewhere, I immediately get a barrage of notifications of everything I missed which pop down from the top of the phone. This is already annoying but what really makes it bad is that to interact with most apps you have to tap something at the top of the screen. So, for example, if I want to type a search into Maps, I end up tapping right as another notification pops up and then I get taken to the app from which the notification came. It is beyond frustrating. I do however want to get notifications on my lock screen so turning notifications off completely doesn't work for me. Is there some kind of work around that anyone knows about. If not and Apple is reading this, please make this user experience better or put in a fix so I can stop pulling my hair out each time I am unintentionally taken to another app.
