Hi, if you are talking about in icon view:

  • Right click on an empty space in the finder window (between icons)
  • Choose: Sort by> Snap to grid

can you give me directions on how to do this?

In the Toolbar, click the View tool and choose Icon view.

Then, from the Action tool, choose "Show View Options" (cmd-J)

Then, set up the grid and icon size (and anything else) in that pane:

Also, there isn't a "Sort by Grid" but a Snap to Grid and then Sort by something else. Snap to Grid will allow you to manually sort, but keep them in a grid position. Sort by will keep them sorted by whatever category and they will snap to the top, left grid and down.

Notice there is a Group by and a Sort by. On the Toolbar, just clicking will give you Group By. Option+click will give you the Sort by options. Grouping arranges the items in categories that can also be sorted. So, you could group by Date, and Sort By Name.
