unable to verify name or password

I get a message on my desktop "unable to verify account name or password". I can neither restart or turn off the MacBook. please help. both username and password are correct

That message will appear in Mail (for example) but it's difficult to be certain from the information you provided.


Two options:


  • Quit the recalcitrant app by using  (Apple menu) Force Quit... If you don't know which app is causing that message just quit all the open apps in the usual manner until only one remains. It will be the culprit.
  • Force the Mac to shut down by pressing and holding its power button / Touch ID button until the Mac shuts down. That takes about five seconds. Release the power button when the Mac shuts down. Then, restart it in the usual manner in an effort to find which app is causing trouble.


As I wrote I suspect it's Mail. That message will appear for any failure to authenticate, even if you are 100% certain the credentials are correct. The solution is to remove the Mail account(s), and add them again. Refer to If you can’t send or receive email on Mac - Apple Support.
