How to add titles, captions and more to photos using Photos on Mac?

Hi all,

I've just gone to Monterey on my iMac.

I used to be able to add and edit photo titles in the main window by entering them in the field under the photo. Now it seems I have to open Info and do it there. Is is possible to do it directly in the main window as in previous versions?

It's just one more step to open Info. With a few photos it's no problem. But when there are hundreds that require individual title changes (i.e not possible to select multiple photos and do a batch change) the extra step is really time-consuming. I don't know why the old system needed to be changed.

Wondering if Apple's "Tip" below is of any help:

"Tip: To quickly add titles to photos right in the main Photos window, choose View > Metadata > Titles, click the field that appears under a photo when you hold the pointer over it, then type a name."

Comes from Apple Support's article for Monterey, which also has other info:

Editing the title field under the thumbnails has sometimes seemed a little flaky, with the cursor not going where I thought it would, but I haven't seen your problem even though I use it from often enough, and have in Monterey, Ventura, and Sonoma, at least. I wonder what's different...

Try this:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

Mostly I use the 3rd Party app Photos Workbench ($30) to add sequential titles with dates and text, and I type directly into the Thumbnail tittle field when there's just a couple to fix up, or when I make mistakes.

Let us know what you find....

After the upgrade to Monterey it has been a bit buggy, when I tried to enter titles directly into the Title field below the thumbnails. Usually it helped to restart the Mac when that happened.

Also, it helped to wait a bit after importing new photos and to enter the titles only after the photos appeared in All Photos, not while they were only visible in Recents.

It is more stable now on macOS 14 Sonoma.

Thanks brbo,

The tip is what I'm doing now, but was hoping to go back to the way I used to enter titles – directly in the main window, without the need to open a further window. Strangely, I can enter titles this way the first time I bring a photo into the app. But after that, I can't type into the field. The only way to change the title after that is in Info.
