Fake Apple Security pop-up?

I was browsing the internet, and I needed to check something on a news site, even though I checked the address safari redirected me to a page called “browsing protecttion” (yes with two t’s). I then received an official looking pop-up from “apple” on this webpage, that said my device was infected with malware. The only option on the pop-up, was to close it down. I didn’t press that button, I instead pressed back to my previous page. Is there anything else I need to do? Or am I safe? I have read, as long as you don’t press anything on the page, you’re safe, but is that true? Thanks for the help :)
