Will an iPad run out of charge if left off for a while

I won’t be able to use my iPad (generation 10) for a week, I last left it turned off but not shut down and not charging, it was at around 74% battery, will it run out of power completely in this time?

iPad, iPadOS 17

An iPad, with typical settings, will consume about 10% of its battery per day while left in its standby/sleeping state - and as such can be expected to fully deplete its battery in about a week.

By contrast, if the iPad has been fully shut-down, battery consumption is reduced to almost nothing. When shut-down with a fully charged battery, the battery will retain a useable charge for many months before a recharge will be required.

Hey there!

Thanks for asking the community!

I understand that you're curious about iPad discharging while sleeping (display is off, but the iPad is on).

iPadOS does a series of things in the background, ranging from system tasks, to 3rd party app refreshes. All of this uses energy on the battery, which in time, can cause it to go dead.

This link from Apple's support webpage has some useful information regarding the kind of batteries used in Apple devices (lithium-ion), and some more about their behavior: Charge the iPad battery - Apple Support

However, if your iPad battery still seems to run down fast, you can contact Apple Support for a diagnostic! An AppleCare Advisor has the ability to check the health of the battery, and can let you know if it's recommended to service your iPad. You can call AppleCare at 1 (800)APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273), or on their website at https://getsupport.apple.com/

I hope this helped!

Low Power mode, if active, reduces background processes and can extend battery autonomy. Your iPad will automatically switch to Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 10% - and will shut down completely at 0%.

You should not recharge the battery as soon as possible to protect the battery from irreversible damage. A Li-ion battery should never be allowed to remain in a fully discharge state.
