My wife started the setup and forgot the passcode. Now, power up br3ings the Hello screen and scrolling up requests the forgotten passcode. Done. This was a gift almost a year ago and she put it back in the box. It is an iPad Air i spent a bunch of money on. I want to register it to me then transfer it to her because she doesn't want to look at it and doesn't remember her Apple password either.

You will need access to the Apple ID associated with the original setup.
If the password to that was forgotten, you'll either need to recover that Apple ID access, or provide purchase documentation to Apple to get Activation Lock removed.

That worked! That 5th generation iPad Air is back to factory settings. I will insist that she work with a pad and pencil and record her passcode this time.
