Can I setup my AppleTV so that it adjusts the sound output through the HDMI cable?

Hi!

Can I setup my AppleTV so that it adjusts the sound output through the HDMI cable?

If I attach any computer to a monitor with built in speakers with HDMI, the computer handles the sound level. AppleTV seems to handle that differently, it seems to need HDMI-CEC on the monitor.

Is that right or is there a way to get the AppleTV to handle the volyme?

Regards

Leif

Apple TV will normally not manage the volume over HDMI. Instead, volume control from the Siri Remote is send to the TV/monitor/screen/projector or audio system, directly via IR. That means that the TV/monitor/screen/projector or audio device needs an IR receptor for such signals.

Apple TV can optionally send volume control signals via the Apple TV box, then through HDMI-CEC to an AV receiver that is programmed to use such CEC signals for its own volume control — the audio stream over HDMI is untouched, but processed at the last device before the speakers. TVs and monitors are not known to support receiving volume control signals over CEC from other devices.

Bluetooth speakers or select AirPlay speakers may be able to be volume controlled through the Apple TV box, when they connect (wirelessly) to the Apple TV box, not through HDMI.
