I had been watching some discussions on BD playback on Apple silicon Macs, finding things change over the years. What is the status of it now? I hope there is a definitively working combination of a BD drive and a S/W player that plays 4k UHD BD without ripping it. Please update me.

I use the superdrive, so I cannot say which blu-ray player is best. but you can check out OWC DVD / CD / Blu-ray drives and see if they have one that fits your needs. they are the go-to place for Mac compatible hardware.

if those specs aren't listed on OWC’s website, your best bet would be to contact their support team. along with quality hardware, they provide excellent support.
