Why is my iPad touch screen lagging?

Hard to put this into words but my new iPad seems have extremely difficult usability. When I was setting it up and providing a passcode, email etc it took forever as I was having to type 1 character at a time. For example even now if I am to enter passcode I have to type the first number, double click on the box, go back to keyboard, type second number, double click on box again. Tried to change this in settings, no progress. Also the touch screen is very sluggish.

many help much appreciated.

ps I have two iPhones and haven’t had these issues. Was hoping the iPad was similar in usability to the iPhone.

If your iPad is not performing as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If latency persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad:

Thanks for the suggestions. Restart didn’t help. This is a brand new product btw. Had two/three iPhones all perfect.

btw any thoughts specifically about the keyboard? The lagging touch screen is the second issue right now. I can’t even normally type passcode, it needs each number to be typed and then double click the box to input the number, then back to the keyboard, type next number and then double click again, and on and on. If I try to type passcode in normal way, no response.

One last try, any help much appreciated. I have a new iPad that I can’t get functional. I’ve used iPhones for years, very easy, very intuitive. Just one question about a new iPad: is it normal that when entering a passcode you have to type one number at a time? By this I mean the only way to enter passcode is to type a number, then double click on the box, then go back to the keyboard, type next number, double click back on the box, and so on. If I type passcode normally as on an iPhone it doesn’t respond. This is an issue, right? I just need to know if this is how they come.

thanks a lot
