The command shell is not used here, and most of this thread is unrelated to accessing these files.

This is why I asked you to back up.

You’ll need to locate apps that can access these ClarisWorks and Adobe files.

LibreOffice can probably open the ClarisWorks file.

I’m unfamiliar with “Adobe 4” in this context. Did you mean Adobe Photoshop 4.0, maybe?

If this is an older version of Photoshop, do you have a newer or current Photoshop version installed? If so, that app might be able to open these files. I’ve seen references to enabling wider compatibility, as well: Edit > Preferences > File Handling, select Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility, and set that to either Always or Ask. (No Adobe Photoshop, and no old PSD files to verify that here setting, though.)

The current free LibreOffice Suite (requires macOS Catalina or later) can open both Mac and Windows ClarisWorks 5/AppleWorks 6 files to varying degrees of success depending on how many AppleWorks tools went into creating the individual document. Since you do not have any application currently installed that can open these, they will appear in Finder with the Unix Executable Icon — as has been mentioned elsewhere:

If any of those Claris/AppleWorks documents contain a database, that content will get converted to a LibreOffice Calc spreadsheet without formulas.

Starting with macOS Catalina 10.15, Apple set the default shell to the Z shell (zsh). In previous macOS versions, the default was Bash. They are quite similar, and either one can be used to run command line binaries (“Unix Executable Files”). Search: zsh vs bash

Bash users may see the zsh message every time they launch Terminal. It doesn’t matter much. Everything works, and nothing is broken. Change it to zsh if you want, or don’t.

Can you back up a few steps, and provide some background on what problem you’ve encountered here, or what issue or area or concern or problem you’re trying to do or solve or implement?

None of the shell script stuff is particularly related to Finder reporting some files as UNIX executable files for instance, if that is the case you are encountering here.

Within Finder, encountering a file listed as a UNIX executable file in the Mac GUI usually means some GUI app is missing or malfunctioning or misconfigured, or maybe there’s some sort of a corruption. This for files typically found in a /Users related directory, and not if you’re intentionally poking around in some decidedly obscure areas within macOS using Finder or such, and not if you are using command-line tools or such.

Put differently, what do you think is in the files listed as a UNIX executable file?

And if you don’t know what these UNIX executables contain and the source is not trusted, I would not suggest running them without performing further diligence.

Well those are not issues with your Mac or Terminal, those are both Adobe issues. Do you have any versions of Photoshop installed on your Mac? If you do not and also do not want to buy new subscriptions (Adobes only model right now for using their software) then you need to do some research for third party applications that will open Claris Works and Adobe 4 files.

  1. First you will need to identify what the file extension is, for example .txt, .png, .pdf etc....
  2. Then you also need to determine what you want to do with the files once you open them so you can determine whatever application you decide on will do what you want!

In other words you need to take a step back and think this through a bit before deciding on the course of action you want to take!!
