Does the CD player have an LED light?
Is the disc a branch new commercial music CD?
Is your Finder menu -> Preferences -> Sidebar showing CDs, DVDs and iOS devices as connected?
Is this a Mac Pro desktop, or MacBook Pro notebook computer. Some MacBook Pros don't give sufficient power for external peripherals. For those that are USB-C, get a USB-C pass through hub that uses the MacBook Pros power charger to charge the hub.

Are examples of such docking stations. Make sure whatever hub you get has at least 100W capability. If it is a Magsafe 3 Mac, get a USB-C hub that has its own AC/DC power adapter such as this one:

If the player has a tray and has snap on nubs on the spinner, be sure the disc snaps on.
Keep in mind older discs may not work due to aging and wear. Sony manufactured music disks also are only readable with older OSes because of a Sony Rootkit installed on newer OSes:

I found for these discs, it was useful to have an older Mac with Snow Leopard compatibility.
Lastly some discs are UDF compatible, see this tip:
