How do I upgrade from MacBook Pro 8,1 13'' early 2011, Mac OS Sierra version 10.12.6 to latest version

Hi, How do I upgrade from MacBook Pro 8,1 13'' early 2011, Mac OS Sierra version 10.12.6 to latest version when I try for software updates its saying that I don't have any but my OS Sierra 10.12.6 is out of date and won't let me down load latest version.

Back up your data, check the application compatibility table, click here, and then on the download link for High Sierra. That model can't be upgraded past it.

Your Mac is on 10.12 but it can advance to 10.13, but that is as far as it can go, because yes, it is too old for the newest MacOS. Even if you upgrade to High Sierra (others responding have posted instructions), you will be SEVEN versions behind in the MacOS with current, soon to be EIGHT. Sierra dates from 2016, High Sierra from 2017. There are a number of web sites and many software packages that will not work with Sierra or High Sierra. So yes, I would agree that your Mac is too old for some uses. I have a 2010 MacBook Air that is still running well but it is only used occasionally for email or simple web browsing. Mine can run High Sierra.
