The younger the child, the harder it is to drive home the two fundamental rules: 1) Don’t share your passcode, and 2) Don’t allow others unsupervised access to your unlocked phone.

A non-jailbroken phone cannot be hacked. Why do you think her phone was hacked? If her Apple ID was compromised, change her password.

VPN does not provide any protection; and actually using VPN INCREASES the risk of data compromise, because the VPN provider knows everything about your internet use. And many of them steal and sell that information. And if the VPN is free, that guarantees that your data will be stolen, because the provider has to make money somehow.
