No merge option for Mac?

Holding the Option key does not prompt for merge.

An exec has had his icloud sync messed up for a while, there are duplicates of all his data about 3TB in total. The updated files are scattered throughout the duplicate/not duplicate folders and I need to merge them all together keeping the newest ones. All other operating systems have this feature. How can I get this done without doing it manually?

You get an option for merge if you are copying a folder with the same name as an existing one.

I don't see how this would work if you already have folders and subfolders and multiple versions of files scattered throughout. I mean how would the system even determine that some files should be seen as versions of one another? Having the same name on different folders is a perfectly normal thing in any hierarchical file system.

"Merge" would only ever apply if trying to copy something with the same name to the same place.

Can you clarify?
