Finder > File > Get Info > Comments -- Increase the character limit?

I love the "Comment" function in the Mac Finder.

Right-click a file, select "Get Info," and there's a comment section where you can leave text such as the URL of where an image came from.

Is there a way to increase the character limit on what you can put in the "Comment" box?

I would like to include long passages of text if possible.

In macOS, the comment field in the "Get Info" dialog typically has a character limit of about 255 characters.

This limit is set by the Operating System and cannot be increased.

If you need to include longer notes, consider using a text file or Notes.

I just set 951 characters from the clipboard into the comment box of a PDF file using AppleScript, but the same clipboard content would just beep when an attempt to add it via Finder copy/paste into a Get Info comment box.

A file URI in a comment box is not an active link and if the file it points to is deleted or moved, then that URI comment reference is worthless.

Otherwise, what Matti Haveri has stated.

Beware that macOS Finder comments are proprietary metadata and moving files through non-Mac environments might nuke them.

Standard internal IPTC/XMP metadata is more robust so I'd suggest using that for long-term support. It is possible to copy Finder comments to those tags. IPTC is being phased out so I might soon drop it and use only XMP. Movie metadata is still a "Wild West" and I currently use "Keys" there.
