I have been trying to update some of my apps, but when I click update, I am shown my old ID and
asked for my old password. My current ID and password works fine in other instances, but not when
trying to update. So I want to use my current one for that purpose..how do I delete the old one???

The problem is that you downloaded those apps with your previous Apple ID and did not follow the correct procedure to change it.

What you did was just signed out of your previous ID, which left those apps on your device and signed into the device with your new Apple ID. Now those previous apps will not be able to be updated because they are linked to the previous ID and you will need to provide that password to update them.
The solution now will be to delete those apps and download them again with your new Apple ID.

You’ve posted this to a user to user forum. This is not Apple support and if or when you get an answer from other users will vary.
Have you deleted the apps from the device, then got/purchased them again from the AppStore with your current ID?
