I try to buy or update a app it say there was a problem with a previous purchase, gave up on fixing that, so I just got a gift card and I don’t want to put it in and just have it say that again and not make my purchase
If a previous purchase was unable to be successfully completed, it will issue the message until you allow it to complete and charge you. No way around this.
Adding the gift card to your account will cause it to use the balance from it to attempt to complete that previous purchase.
It may still require the addition of a verified payment method before it will let you use the Apple Store services again
You will not be able to successfully purchase anything, until you resolve that issue.
