Apple isn’t going to connect two devices together just due to their proximity.
If y’all are not sharing one Apple ID, the iPhone here were not and are not connected.

I can only assume that you saw the Name Drop screen appear. You would have to tap the Share or Receive button on the screen and then the contact would be shared with the other phone. Here is some info on Name Drop to see if that is what happened.
