I have a beautiful 27' iMac of 2009. I'd like to use it as an external monitor for my macbook pro running Monterey. Has anybody managed to make it work?
I have looked for target display mode and this cannot be found, I have also connected both with an apple thunderbolt cable.

To use any of these iMac models as an external display:
The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Mini DisplayPortDisplayPort cable.

Although a 2009 27-inch iMac supported Target Display Mode, note dialabrain's SECOND point about your Macbook Pro. Its OS is too new.

As mentioned, that hookup is going to require a Mini DisplayPort cable connection.
To get there you will need a USB-C to Mini DisplayPort cable or....
a USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter and a Mini DisplayPort cable.
