Will at the 4 Ports of my Studio Display provide Power?

Of the 4 USB-C ports on Studio Display, one is marked for power. The other three will not provide power. However, I attached a USB-A device to a non-power port using an adapter, and there is magically power from that port. Why is this? My cynical side makes me think Apple is hiding power ports from us so we have to buy more separate chargers. But this is wild.

The three downstream USB-C ports probably only provide traditional USB 5V power. The upstream Thunderbolt 3 port provides up to 96 W of power – no doubt using USB-C Power Delivery.

  • Traditional USB 5V power = up to 2.5W (500 mA @ 5V) for a USB 2 host port, or 4.5W (900 mA @ 5V) for a USB 3 host port.
  • USB-C Power Delivery power = up to 240W (5 A @ 48V), depending upon the voltage that is negotiated between the device supplying the power, the device consuming it, and the cable.
