Apple Watch Ultra 2 not recording heart rate properly

Watch Ultra 2 with eSIM, with watchOS 10.5. Always problem measuring heart rate when out of the iPhone reach- outdoors, with Ultra 2 on LTE and WiFi.

It says “Measuring” for a minute or so and later show “Actual” with two dashes instead of numbers.

Now I am 100% certain- when I turn off LTE and WiFi I can at once measure correctly and read measured heart rate. Seems like some kind of interference between heart rate measurement and cell/wifi connection… as seriously ill person needing to measure heart rate when needed I am happy to find a workaround- Apple should fix this.

I am experiencing this issue in Czech Republic, iPhone 15 Plus, T-Mobile eSIM.

Hallo back. I have called Apple Support and they told me that there is no need to apply for Ultra 2 warranty claim as there is nothing wrong with the watch. It is the software problem to be handled. So I am waiting. In the meantime I have easy workaround as I do not like switching on/off the LTE… I simply take EEG on my watch and in five heartbeats I get my heart rate.

Have you tried doing a forced restart of your Apple Watch?

A forced restart is more than just turning your Watch off and on. If there is no improvement you’ll need to unpair the Watch from your iPhone, force restart the Watch and the iPhone and lastly pair the two devices again. You may notice a decrease in battery performance for 2 or 3 days, but that’s normal. Battery performance will return.

So, to be 100% sure, I have performed your steps once again, and it is the same. My thinking is (before giving Watch to warranty claim)… because I think hardware of the watch does not have a problem (when measuring EEG- I have heart rate after five beats…), so it seems it is the software issue. Would it not be worthwhile to wait for some watchOS update…? Maybe it would be resolved.

Measuring heart rate (BPM) and ECG are two different things, involving two different technologies. Heart rate uses the green LEDs on the bottom of the watch, in direct contact with your skin. ECG measures an electrical pulse/current through your body. The fact that one works and one doesn’t is unrelated in diagnosing your watch’s issue.

Unpairing and then pairing the watch as new will leave off your old software, which could be contributing to the issue.

You can test your theory by pairing it to a different iPhone and see if heart rate measurement performs better.

I have a similar/same issue. Within the last few months the heartbeat function on my Ultra 2 stopped working. I’m pretty sure it’s either the iPhone or Watch iOS. Both have been updated at least twice in the last few months.

I did get my Ultra 2 to work just now by turning “Airplane” mode on/off.

I doubt that is a permanent solution; previously I got Heartbeat to work by doing a full reset (nuking everything) on the Ultra 2, but Heartbeat again stopped working after a few days.
