For any system which uses an internal hard drive either needs to first have Filevault enabled & the encryption process completed prior to using the instructions in the Apple article @BobTheFisherman linked, or you need to perform a secure erase of the hard drive to write a single pass of zeroes to the entire hard drive to destroy all your data on a hard drive. Disk Utility has the secure erase option available only for the hard drive.
If the Mac uses an internal SSD, then just follow the instructions in the Apple article since a simple erase will destroy all data on an SSD which has TRIM enabled (Apple SSDs do have TRIM enabled).
If the Mac uses a Fusion Drive, then it uses an SSD and a hard drive, so you will want to make sure to perform a secure erase of that hard drive as well as a simple erase of the internal SSD.
