Some songs missing from albums I have imported from CDs to itunes

I have recently noticed that a number of songs are missing from each album that I have imported from CDs. In some cases the full album is there and in many others there might be just two or three songs on each album. I have checked in the folder that contains all the music files for itunes and they are missing from there so it's not an issue that itunes can't "see" them, they have simply disappeared from the files themselves. Any thoughts?

Have you looked in your iTunes Library for the song title?

If you look on the album title list, or even by artist name, it is possible that some tracks may be missing from the list because there are situations whereby songs on an album can become separated from each other (both in iTunes and in the folder where the album is supposed to be located). To check for this, the very first thing to do is look in your library for a missing song, by the song title.

If you find the song, you next have to work out why it is listed separately to the rest of the album. Likely causes include:

    • the album has been incorrectly identified as a compilation album (a various artists album) when it isn't
    • it has been incorrectly identified as a solo artist album, when it is in fact a compilation. This usually causes each track to be listed as a separate album
    • guest artists on some tracks on an album, which can cause those tracks to be listed under the artist name of both the main and the guest artist

That is not an exhaustive list, and you should not spend too much time focusing on those examples. They simply act to demonstrate how one can think that tracks are missing from your library. Post back with the results of your search, do you find the missing tracks in your library, but simply not listed with the rest of the album? Once we know that the track is in iTunes somewhere, we can then work out why and how to get it listed with the rest of the album.

By the way, even if you cannot find a missing song in the storage location folder with the rest of the tracks, it might be in a different folder. Usually, in this situation, the file for a track may be in a different folder to the rest of the album, but still listed in your iTunes Library.

Here's another "look for the missing track" tip:

using the screenshot below as your guide, use the Songs view (2.) and sort your library by Date Added (3.). (You may need to add the Date Added column, I can provide steps to do this if required.) Then look for the album in the album column; all the tracks should be listed adjacent to one another as you presumably copied them from the CD on the same occasion. Are the missing tracks there?
