Moving MPEG-4 audio files to my MacBook and iTunes

I just bought a MacBook and am moving items from my old MAC to this laptop. Discovered a lot of my personal music that I put on iTunes ages ago from CD's that I purchased are MPEG-4 Audio files (apparently Apple converted them at some point). How do I get this music in my iTunes account so I can play the? I do not have the cd's any more, I donated them. I also have some that say protected MPEG-4 audio, don't know the difference.
