Not enough space on iPhone to restore backup from PC

Hello.

I’ve read many, many, many threads on this issue but not found an answer to this.

I did a full backup to my Windows 10 PC in June through iTunes.

I tried to restore this backup last night and got the “Unable to restore because there’s not enough storage…”.

I have a 256gb iPhone Pro Max. 99GB is in use. There is more than enough space to restore the backup.

Both iTunes and iPhone are updated to latest versions.

i have a newer full backup on iCloud but I want to go back to my earlier backup.

Is there a problem with iTunes? The backup is not corrupt.
