I want to move one icon om my desktop ( sonoma )

Mac studio / apple display / Sonoma 14.5

I have all desktop icons neatly organized on right side of my screen .

It is thanks to all my screenshots stacked .

I need just one or two icons moved to the left of the screen .

I tried command / move

  • it doesnt work .

here is what i get on my desktop when i turn off stacking .

( so that is not a good option )

There must be a simple way to do what I want, right ?

Stacks will group like things into pseudo-folders. If the two items you want on the left are similar to the other files, you can't use Stacks.

Just starting with "I need just one or two icons moved to the left of the screen" means you have to disable all of the automatic placement options and use a manual layout.

In the View Options for the Desktop, turn off Stacks and set the sort to Snap to Grid.

Manually organize your files into folders. Move everything wherever you want it to be.

You can "Clean up by" from the contextual menu to sort all of them by some criteria, but they will build from right to left.

As PRP_53 said, you can select any location you want in which to put your screenshots. One suggestion is to just create a new folder called “Screenshots” right there on your desktop. This will go a long way to keeping your desktop manageable and organized.

As to moving the icons: oc course you can. But you have to decide: if you use Stacks then you can’t make exceptions (eg a stack for all pdf except this or that).

Also, you can’t set an order (like by kind or by name) and expect to move things. Set the order to None and you will be free to move things about.
