Is it possible to install macOS Sonoma on a 32 GB USB drive?

AFAIR about 65 GB free space is needed for macOS install because there is some overhead. Cloning an existing barebones install might need somewhat less like about 30 GB. It depends on the macOS version.

Follow the suggestion by @Matti Haveri and use a larger External SSD Drive if you what some reasonable performances

It works but USB flash/thumb drives are usually slow and and unreliable. For real work real SSDs are recommended.
