Apparently the padlock ALSO indicates that the phone is Activation Locked. 🤷‍♂️

(this is something harder for us fellow users to test)

The Activation Lock message you received from Apple means that the criminals had reset your phone (which completely erased it) and then encountered Apple’s Activation Lock screen.

Note that the legitimate message from Apple was simply a statement of fact about the phone. It did NOT request that you do anything, nor did it contain a link to any other website.

Unless: 1) Your AppleID password is entered directly into the device, OR 2) You remove the device from your AppleID …

that phone can never again be used as a fully-functional iPhone.

It’s only economic value to anyone - other than to you - is either for parts, recycling, or resale to unsuspecting scam victims.

So … unless you intend to reward the criminals with their ill-gotten “prize” … do NOT ever remove that device from your AppleID.

IGNORE any phishing messages you are likely to receive going forward attempting to obtain your AppleID credentials. These can appear VERY authentic … but they are ALL scams and NEVER from Apple or any legitimate entity.

As Chattanoogan has said.....the padlock is an indication that the iPhone has been placed in Lost Mode.

Here is more information about Lost Mode.......Use Lost Mode in Find Devices on iCloud.com - Apple Support

The iPhone is also "Offline". This means that Find My cannot locate the phone because one or more of the following are true:

  • The battery has run down
  • The phone has been powered off (most models)
  • The phone does not have an Internet connection

Unfortunately, there is not really anything you can do about the "Offline" status except keep checking a few times each day to see if the status of the phone has changed, so its location will be displayed.
