Tried plugging charger cable with lightning connector into my iPad and it would not sit in socket. I tried 3 different plugs; all of which fit properly in my other iPad and iPhone. Visual exam did not reveal obstruction. I’ve never encountered this issue with any of mobile Apple gear I’ve owned. Any ideas?

As described, the spring retainers (integral to the Lightning port on your iPad) have been damaged or broken. You can't see what isn't there. Repair is the only remedy:

If there’s not debris lodged in the bottom of the socket as can happen, contact Apple Support and discuss your options and alternatives with them.
