Adding a page break to a style

I am pretty new to Pages, but mostly have found my way. I have two interrelated issues that I haven't found answers to anywhere. To start with, I made a style I called 'chapter number' with the normal features: font, size, centering.

  1. This worked fine. Then I went back and revised 'chapter number style' by putting a hard page break just before the text. This seemed to be working at first, but now it is not. No hard page break show up with the style. I will try to just remember to put a page break in with every new chapter, but it would be good to have this happen automatically. Is this possible? And if so, is there an example style someplace I could look at?
  2. If I have trouble with (for example) a hard page break showing up where it's not expected, is there a way to reveal format coding? Or can I search for it, and if so, how?

In general is there a collection of styles people have made for use with Pages to look at? That seems like a good idea to me.

I'm using Pages on a MacBook Pro and on an iPad Pro, both up to date with the latest system software and apps. Any help much appreciated.
