Trackpad on my MacBook Pro not functioning

G,Day members, I have a 2020 MacBook Pro M1 Sonoma 14.5 OS trackpad was working fine until this morning. Cannot highlight text, copy and paste using trackpad. When I hold down one finger press on trackpad and then highlight it only highlights one word in yellow. It used to highlight all text as I scrolled along the sentence copied and then was able to paste where ever. Have restarted and used disk utility everything is good.Have booted in safe mode but the problem is still there. There was no update done prior to this problem it just happened. Have checked for updates but everything is up to date.I have noticed several posts regarding the same problem and have followed recommendations but nothing works. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.Thank You Michael.

Sometimes a swelling battery can cause unexpected trackpad and keyboard behavior.

How to check for a swelling Macbook Pro battery:

  • Carefully inspect the gap between the bottom cover and the main chassis. The gap should be tiny and uniform.
  • Missing screws that you did not remove are also a symptom of a swelling battery.
  • Hold the computer with the disaply open at just below eye level. You should see a perfectly flat trackpad. Any bowing or doming can indicate a swelling battery.
  • Place the computer on a known flat surface and see if the computer rocks as if sitting on only three of its four rubber "feet." I find granite and solid-surface (quartz, etc) countertops to to the most flat surface in many homes and apartments.

If you detect swelling, do not delay is seeking battery service from Apple. Swelling can increase daily and the is enough force the permanent damage the case and or logic board.

Have you shut down and restarted...?
