After installing macOS Monterey, Kerberos appeared in Notifications
Why is Kereros just showing up now, and in Notifications of all places? If
I have read MartinR’s explanations in answer to another user's questions about Kerberos and I find them disturbingly mysterious. I have never subscribed to a VPN, and how would I know if I’ve ever logged into a network that uses "Active Directory”? Who, or what, needs Kerberos for "Mobile Device Management" on my Mac? How do I find these "Profiles installed" on my Mac by unidentifiable Kerberos-related service(s)?
When l looked into “Active Directory,” I learned that it relies on one or more directory services. "A directory service is a database for storing and maintaining information about users and resources." Without knowing what or who installed Kerberos, how do I know if I consented to having my information stored in that database? This stuff doesn’t inspire me with confidence in the security of my PII.
If, as another participant claims, Kerberos has lived incognito on Macs since 2001, why is it surfacing 23 years later? Will this “network authentication protocol designed to provide strong authentication for client/server applications by using secret-key cryptography” notify me when a hacker tries to steal my identity? When my PII is for sale on the dark web? When it decides to disappear again?
There are (49) files on my Mac that contain ‘Kerberos’ in their names. Their modification dates span 2014 to 2019. Is there any way to find out what installed Kerberos on my Mac in 2014 and stopped using it six years later? It’s probably an application I don’t use anymore and will never use again. If that’s the case, why shouldn’t I remove it? What might be affected if I do?
