Why are some songs greyed out or not available on Apple Music?

Songs on my Mac mini are either greyed out or, if not greyed out, when I click it I get 'There was a temporary problem completing your request. The requested resource was not found' or 'This requires iTunes Match or Apple Music'. It then starts zipping through the library by itself to find sth it can play, then alights on it and plays. These available songs it can play are a tiny fraction of my library and their availability seems completely random, e.g. other songs on same album are unavailable. Driving me nuts! How can I get my library back?

Make sure the time is set correctly on your computer. Disable any VPN. Reboot. Press and hold down option+cmd when launching Music to open it in its safe mode. Make sure your computer is authorized to your Apple ID, you are signed into your Apple ID, and that you have an active subscription to Apple Music or iTunes Match.
