Third-party batteries for A1398 Macbook Pro's. Any issues reported?
Hello,
I have an Early-2013 Macbook Pro which is on its third battery. First two were legit Apple ones: the original battery and one top case replaced free from Apple Care (even after Apple Care has expired). However, since 2021, my Mac was tagging the second battery as "Service Recommended". If I'm not wrong, Early-2013 models are currently in "vintage" status, although local AASPs will install new batteries, probably not original Apple ones.
This said, I decided to install a new generic battery by myself following Youtube tutorials. I also had to replace a set of crackling speakers, a known issue on these Macs. The procedure required isolating the display with plastic film, so I'd prevent isopropyl alcohol from reaching it, and the battery removal process requires quite a lot of isopropyl alcohol applying. Everything went well, but now I have some observations:
The new generic battery doesn't seem to provide the same battery life as an original one. Don't know if it has to do with 2024 software CPU requirements (web browsers, youtube and so on), but the current installed battery usually lasts about 2h-2h30 with an LTE internet modem plugged on the USB port and 60% screen brightness. Brand new original ones would easily reach 3h30-4h30 in the same context. Apple advertised something about 8h of battery life for this model, but I don't know how they reached this number, perhaps with brightness at 30% and light browsing (reading and editing text through Google Docs, perhaps).
Question: if you also replaced your old rMBP with a new battery, how is your experience? Do you feel like it's lasting like original ones? Thank you!
