My IPhone SE 17.5.1 does not beep when messages come in. i’ve checked the ringtones in Settings and they are set at the loudest. The ringer button on the side of the phone is also set to the loudest.

Do you use an Watch? If you are wearing a watch notification alerts appear on the watch instead of the phone, unless the phone is unlocked. This is a feature so you don’t get dual alarms for one notification.
