Is It Possible to Have Multiple Apple Accounts?

Hello...


I've written about this issue in the past, only to get no satisfactory help from people here who seemed to me to be Apple reps: There are songs I can no longer play, because my ISP changed and therefore, so did my Apple account info. Unfortunately, Apple has no recourse for this, and the material you purchased under this now obsolete address renders all of your purchases with it obsolete too. This is unacceptable.


While I have a solution (possibly two) to the problem, I did come across my old account info in e-mails I'd saved. Today I tried them, but the Music app would not accept those credentials to play the song I wanted to play.


Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it possible to set up multiple accounts and play now-unplayable songs? Why did this not work? I get that they are no longer the credentials for currently accessing the Apple stores and things I bought from it, but if I could set up multiple, parallel accounts, could that not work?

Sure Apple has recourse for that. Change your Apple ID to your current email address. The support article Change your Apple ID - Apple Support outlines various methods for changing the email address (Apple ID) you use for your Apple Account while retaining everything in your account.


Parallel accounts would only work if you set up Family Sharing with yourself. To learn how to set up Family Sharing, read this support article --> Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support


You do not say what made you think Apple would not accept the credentials for the old account. Whre exactly did it fail, and with what messages?

How to change your Apple ID email address on the web

When possible, the web process redirects you to a trusted device to change your Apple ID. If you don't have a trusted device, you can still change your Apple ID email address on the web.

Go to appleid.apple.com and sign in. Then follow the onscreen instructions to change the email address associated with your Apple ID.

You might need to enter a verification code sent to your new Apple ID email address. Learn what to do if you didn't get the email.

What are you doing exactly when the Music app refuses these credentials. We are having to guess where exactly this is happening and what messages you see. For most people the credentials are the same for ALL Apple services. If you sign into your account, you are signing into Apple Music too as well as iCloud and the App Store. There are a few place where you can sign in with a different ID if you wish, but Music isn't one of them. In fact you aren't really signing into the Music app. You don't need to sign in to use it. You only need to sign in of you are subscribed to Apple Music (which is not the same as "Music" alone).

Those credentials are more than 10 years old. But, I was having this trouble 4-5 years ago at least.


Apple told me that those items I can no longer play were bought under different account info, so unless I could come up with that info, I was out of luck. I was told this in these forums, and over the phone by an Apple rep.


I thought that by finding those old address and passwords, I'd be able to access my now-unplayable songs. But, the Music app still rejected those credentials. So, it seems that even having that older info on-hand does me no good.


I thought that maybe-maybe-maybe by setting up different accounts under my name with that old info, I might then be able to play those songs. Hence the original post. However, it later occurred to me that since those e-mail address are no longer functioning, and that info's probably been wiped clean by the respective ISPs, using those address would do me no good anyway, as I'd not be able to get any confirmation messages from Apple.


I'll look into the info provided here, but I have two other recourses for playing these songs.

The Music app itself rejected those older credentials.


To provide a little more of an explanation, last time I spoke to an Apple rep (this was on the phone), I was told that since those email addresses were lost (I'd long since forgotten that info), I was out of luck. But, I recently found the old e-mail confirmations from Apple containing the e-mail addies and passwords. I thought that would work, but then the Music app rejected them.


Anyway, thanks for the info provided guys! Appreciate it. I'll give some of that a shot and see what happens.

No, but I'll try to explain, step-by-step, what happened.


My current credentials work. But, because ~77 items were bought under different credentials (now-defunkt e-mail addresses and passwords), those items will no longer play. Apple people here and on the phone told me that, unless I could come up with that old info, I was out of luck.


I recently came across that info in old e-mails I didn't know I'd saved. So, I said myself, "Self, you can try these old address and accompanying passwords, and maybe you'll be able to play your old stuff!" So, I tried the old info.


I double-clicked on an unplayable item, and this came up (as usual):



This is when I tried one of my old address and passwords. I was then greeted with "Your Apple ID or password is incorrect."



Hence my original post.

Perhaps your information is not up to date? Have you clicked the forgot button?


How old is the account? Depending upon the security version you may be able to recover the account. Do you remember if it used Security Questions, 2 step verification, or two factor authentication?


One remote possibility is if you have not used the account in a long time (more than a year), Apple has retired it. In that case though I would expect a message to that effect (inactive).
