Reduced file size versions crashing Pages

I've created a number of photo books with Pages. I then run File -> Reduce file size... and save the reduced version as a copy.

This has worked well so far. I've created three e-books this way. But suddenly, whenever I try to open the reduced size version of a file, Pages crashes. This has happened with four different files. I just get the 'Pages quit unexpectedly' box.

I saved a copy of the crash report, but can't see any obvious smoking gun.

This behaviour has continued even after a restart.

However, it doesn't happen with the reduced versions of the three earlier projects where everything went fine. Those open without problems.

Any thoughts?

I don't know about you, but I often find that as soon as I post a request for help online I find a solution to the problem myself. But I'll leave this here in case someone else gets the same problem.

I found the solution was this:

  • Open the original (full fat) file.
  • Make a change – eg, type a character then delete it.
  • Save the file (but remain open).
  • Now do the File -> Reduce file size... thing.

I suspect that Pages may have been updated slightly between the time I created the original files and now, and maybe the file size reduction process was choking on a slightly older file format? (These original files were created only about a month of so ago).

Anyway, that's what worked for me.
